On April 24, 2006, the parties
in The Estate of Gary Thompson v. United States, et al.,
Civil Action No. 04-2002 (JR), filed a Stipulation for Compromise
Settlement with the U.S. District Court for the District of
Columbia. The plaintiff, the Office of the United States Attorney,
and the United States Capitol Police mutually agreed upon
the terms of the settlement. Significantly, the plaintiff
voluntarily dismissed with prejudice the claims against the
individually-named officers. The United States did not admit
to any liability in the settlement and the U.S. Capitol Police
maintained that its officers at all times acted appropriately
and within the scope of their official duties. However, taking
a case to trial in any matter always involves litigation risks.
We believe that the settlement of this matter was very reasonable
and the right and fair thing to do. Nevertheless, this was
a very tragic incident and our sympathies go out to Mr. Thompson’s
family. .
